Make Plaster Man Job Easier And Save Yourself Some Money!

Before Mister Plaster Man arrives, you need to:

*** empty the room(s) of all furnishings

*** if plaster is to be removed, cover the floor with cushioning stuff, like old carpet, plywood, layers of cardboard, etc. Plaster is heavy, and can dent your floor if it falls.

If your plasterer is agreeable:

--- when plaster is to be repaired rather than replaced, do all surface prep, including cleaning debris from cracks and pre-filling them. See SURFACE PREP.

--- roll on the bonding agent? Find out what Plaster Man uses. He may supply it, and maybe also check out your crack prep before giving you a green light for the bonder. (Note: bonder necessary when plastering over paint.)

If you get the job of removing plaster from the old wood lath ...

--- expect to get filthy

--- wear a face mask, hat, gloves and eye protection. Old clothes come in handy.

--- start with a hole in the plaster and work out from there. Don't hammer on the wall or ceiling. Use something like a big screwdriver to break up a small area and get a hole going.

--- insert a small flat bar and start prying plaster loose. After a bit, you may be able to grab loose edges and start pulling it free.

--- try to remove smaller pieces at a time if you can. On ceilings especially, gravity wants to take over and bring large chunks down. Two people working together have more control.

--- the ceiling-wall juncture may have metal wire or mesh in the plaster. All this needs to be taken out.

--- when all the old plaster is off, scrape the wood lath to get rid of small bits and chunks.

--- clean up and discard all debris. There may be a lot. Clean the floor and vacuum all dust. The dust will probably have lead paint residues. It wouln't be a bad idea to mop the wood floor before the plaster man begins his part of the project. Re-lay floor covering.

Have a great shower!! (You deserve it - you've made Plaster Man happy.)
