Jazz Up Those Old Plaster Walls With Textured Wallpaper
So ... you tried your hand at texturing with mud, but you're not happy. Could be, textured wallpaper is a logical next step to consider.
If you can hang paper, you are ahead of the game. Or, you may have a friend who is good at it. You're set. Just choose what textured paper you want.
Lots and lots of choices. While not a paper hanger myself, I am acquainted with some textured wallpaper and I must say that I am impressed! Recently, my wife and I took a tour of historic homes in a neighboring city. I saw some beautifully redone interiors, many utilizing embossed wallpaper. Amazing stuff. Probably not cheap, though. Unfortunately, I also saw things that bothered me. Specifically, in some homes, some of the underlying plaster cracks were wrinkling or tearing the textured wallpaper and spoiling the look. If you have been reading this website very much, you have seen how the homeowner should treat plaster cracks. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyhoo), you've got to deal properly with those cracks and other defects before you even think about hanging paper.
In my survey of the internet, I see that textured wallpaper comes in a whole bunch of styles. Some kinds are "textured" in appearance only. They are smooth, even when they look like faux paint finishes or venetian plaster. But many truly are textured - you can feel it. One variety is made to be painted. Once hung, paint is rolled on, making it durable and complementary to your overall color scheme for the room. There is even a product available that is made of fiberglass. It is hung over plaster and then painted when the glue is dry. It is heavy duty stuff, and is billed as the cure for plaster cracks, etc. This may or may not be the cat's meow, but I think I would still fix my plaster cracks in the usual way before I would hang any kind of textured wallpaper, tough or not.
I would suggest you do a searth on the Net for "textured wallpaper". You will have fun and you just may find the effect you are looking for. In some cases, the paper is cheaper than whatever it is you are duplicating, like wood, masonry, tile, embossed tin, grass, etc. You can even duplicate gorgeous Italian plaster with a fraction of the cost of the real thing!
